Would you like to take part in our endeavour to gather short histories of Cornwall’s churches? These histories, which will be published on the website, are a valuable aid for visitors to Cornish churches. Each submission provides OS grid ref/postcode. If you wish, we can produce the guide separately as a laminated A4 sheet for use in your church.
Scroll down to the Index at the bottom of this page and see what has been produced by parishes so far. As you will see, the histories can be just few paragraphs in length, up to an A4 page, and if you have a photograph to accompany the text so much the better. Whilst our aim is to publish historically correct profiles, we won’t ignore some of the quirkier accounts of how Cornwall’s places of worship have evolved. See below the recommended publications which will help you compile the history of your church.
We are writing to all PCCs in Cornwall informing them of the Trust’s Church Histories venture. If you are interested in contributing, two of our trustees, local historian Joanna Mattingly, and archivist Christine Edwards, can help you. If you would like to get in touch with them, in the first instance contact the Church Histories coordinator, Caroline Tetley,

The following publications are recommended sources of references for church histories:
The Saints of Cornwall, by Nicholas Orme (2000)
English Church Dedications: With a Survey of Cornwall and Devon, by Nicholas Orme (1996)
Both the above publications have historical information on church dedications. Note: some parishes have had several dedications.
Cornwall (The Buildings of England), by Nikolaus Pevsner (1970). Note: A useful publication if your parish is mentioned in any detail. New expanded edition long awaited. |
